Whiplash–One of the Most Common Injuries

Your neck is composed of seven bones stacked on top of each other. Between each bone is a shock-absorbing disc. Your neck is fairly flexible, and it depends on your muscles and ligaments for support. Whiplash injuries occur when the soft tissues of your neck are stretched too hard or too far during the impact. Compare it to a rope that frays when it’s stretched beyond its capacity.

Auto accidents are the primary cause of whiplash. Up to 83 percent of people involved in an accident will sustain a whiplash injury.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms may begin immediately or have a delayed start. You may experience ongoing dull neck pain that becomes sharper any time you move your head. You may feel the pain in the back of your neck, but it can migrate to your shoulders, or between your shoulder blades. Tension headaches often accompany neck injuries. Dizziness and TMJ problems may also arise, and other symptoms may increase over time.
